Jewelry Care Tips

Humidity is tough on jewelry.   Silver, especially will really tarnish in humid weather.   Lots of folks aren’t sure just how to clean jewelry.   I’m going to tell you how easy it is.   All you need is a pair of willing hands……

sure, I'll help you

and some everyday household items.   Keep a soft bristle toothbrush just for cleaning jewelry.   I got one at the Dollar Store.   You can use dish detergent if you want Make sure it doesn’t have a lot of additives. (original Dawn works really well).  But, the best thing to use is toothpaste.   Don’t use toothpaste with lots of junk like tartar control.   Either use plain toothpaste with baking soda or Pepsodent Original.   I’m not sure what the extra chemicals might do and don’t want to take a chance with them.   Toothpaste is a very mild abrasive and will clean anything.

See how grungy this piece looks?   We will change that real quick.   Put a little toothpaste on the toothbrush.

I said a LITTLE!!!!!

and scrub really well.   Rinse, and you’re done!

It’s so easy, a child can do it!

all done

Of course, the best way to treat your jewelry is to prevent tarnish.   Take one of the little silica gel packs that come in some boxes of hard candy or in boxes with shoes or a wallet.   Ask a store manager to save you a couple.   Put that silica pack into your jewelry box and you wont have to worry about tarnish at all.

  1. I love the silica pkg. tip. Sterling silver is my favorite jewelry, but it does tarnish easily. Now I need to shop to get some silica pkgs.

    • If you are planning on getting that necklace, I can put a silica pack with it as a gift. I’ve got extras.
